Gun Control: A Civil Debate on a Loaded Topic

It’s in the news every day, with voices on both sides shouting as loudly as they can. Are guns endangering
our children? Do guns keep us safe? Should there be regulations imposed on the constitutional right to
bear arms? What about the many reasons Americans keep and collect guns, from survival and hunting to
entertainment and sportsmanship?

This debate and conversation allows for a civil and honest discussion of the role guns play in our society.
Tone down the rhetoric and politics to critically engage with multiple perspectives on
the issue and foster a constructive conversation. It serves as a model for students to find ways to
be passionate about their position, but respectful in their language and presentation so that they can
actually be heard.
